Why are loss prevention systems so crucial?
Shoplifting and personnel theft are the most frequent sources of inventory shrinkage retailers face. An EAS system cuts off a flow of revenue that runs out like a leaky faucet, putting at risk your hard work and investment.
Research has clearly shown where inventory shrinkage happens. Following is some relevant data about retail loses and causes:
According to the 2003 National Retail Security Survey conducted by the University of Florida, in 2003 U.S. retailers lost $33.6 billion of inventory due to employee theft, shoplifting, administrative error and vendor fraud. This represents an inventory shrinkage rate of 1.65%.
The bad news is that an overwhelming 47% of retail losses, or $15.8 billion, resulted from employee theft, in comparison to 32% of inventory shrinkage, or $10.7 billion, resulting from shoplifting. While incidences of shoplifting outnumber those of employee theft, the average cost of employee theft is much greater than the cost of shoplifting

The 17th Annual Retail Theft Survey conducted among 27 large retail companies in the United States by Jack L. Hayes International -the leading loss prevention and inventory shrinkage control consulting firm -, showed similar findings:
• There is a significant increase in the total apprehensions of both shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2004 of 4.78% (752,629 vs. 718,264) over the prior year.
• On a per case average, dishonest employees steal approximately 6.6 times the amount stolen by shoplifters ($671.03 vs. $101.60).
Other available data suggest that approximately 1 out of every 11 people in our Nation commits shoplifting. Shoplifters steal from all types of stores including department stores, specialty shops, supermarkets, drug stores, discounters, music stores, convenience stores and thrift shops.
How EAS equipment protects your profit?
EAS equipment is commonly installed at the doorway of retailers, with special tags attached to the merchandise. A customer will walk in to a store through a pair of security antennas. In order to take the merchandise out of the store, the customer needs to bring the item up to the cashier so the tag is neutralized either by being removed in the case of the hard tag or turned off in the case of the soft tag. During a shop lifting attempt, the system is designed to immediately notify personnel that merchandise with tags is been taken out of the store. |
